§ 15. I>ie australischen Inseln.

Australien (was bei uns der Reichstag ist); der frisch gegründete Ort 
Dalgety [baldschete] im S. von Neu-Südwales, ist zur Hauptstadt des 
Gesamtstaates Australien ausersehen. 
IV. Tasmaniens die Südinsel, ist 9^mal so groß wie Rügen Tasmanien. 
und gebirgig bis fast zur Höhe der Schneekoppe. Es hat ausreichenden 
Niederschlag und ist darum fruchtbar und erfreut sich, in der Breite etwa 
von Rom gelegen, eines herrlichen Klimas: Australiens bestes Obstland. 
Hobart ist Haupthafen. 
V. Südaustralien entspricht einem Raum, der 4^mal so groß Südaustralien. 
ist wie Deutschland, besitzt aber kaum 4 Ht. E., kaum 75 der E. Berlins: 
auf 7 qlmi 1 Mensch. Es umfaßte zunächst nur die Küste des Austral- 
Busens, besonders die Gegend der beiden Spitzgolfe w. von der wegen 
Versandung kaum fahrbaren Murraymündung; am östlicheren Spitzgolf 
liegt die Hst. * Adelaide [eöeled]. Später schlug man dem Bezirk auch 
alles Land im N. zu bis an den Carpentaria-Busen. Eine Telegraphen- 
linie zieht durchs einsame Jnnenland von Adelaide nach Port Darwin 
an der N.-Küste zum Anschluß Australiens an die unterseeischen Kabel. 
VI. Westaustralien ist der größte der Staaten, aber auch derWestaustralteiu 
dürrste und darum volkärmste. Auf einem Raum, der Deutschland 5 mal 
übertrifft, leben 1/i Mill. E., Ys der E. Berlins: 1 auf 10 qkm. Doch 
hebt es sich neuerdings durch reiche Goldfunde. Die Goldfelder von 
Coolgardie [fütgadi] liegen schon in der Wüste. Alle Lebensbedürfnisse, 
vor allem auch das Wasser, müssen von weither beschafft werden. Die 
Eisenbahn verbindet dies Gebiet mit 'Perth [pörfe] am Schwanenfluß, 
einer durch den Verkehr mit den Goldbezirken schnell erblühten Stadt; ihr 
Vorhafen ist Freemantle ^frimänt^. 
§ 15. 
Die australischen Inseln. 
1. Neu-Guinea 1 s./131 bis 11 f./151. Salomo-Inseln 5 s./155 bis 11 f. 161. Sage. 
Neuseeland von 35 s. bis 47 s. und 166 bis 178. 
2. Die papuanische Jnselreihe ist gebirgig und besitzt zum Teil Papua- 
noch tätige Vulkane. Ihr heißfeuchtes Tropenklima macht sie waldreich Juseln. 
1 Nach Abel Tasman benannt, dem niederländischen Seefahrer, der im 
17. Jahrhundert zuerst Australien umsegelt hat.
