THE FLORA AND FAUNA OF AMERICA 31
the natives regard them with but little fear, they have
been known to seize large animals and even human beings
from the bank, drown them beneath the waters and then
devour them. Another common reptile, that, in addition
to being harmless, provides the natives with an almost
unlimited supply of eggs, is the turtle that frequents the
rivers and deposits its eggs in the shelving sandy banks,
When Europeans first visited America they found no
domestic beast of burden, except the llama, a kind of
small camel that seems to be a near relative of the wild
huanaco, that roams over the plains and mountain slopes
of Patagonia. It is recorded by naturalists that these
animals have a strange habit of retiring to a particular
place to die. Darwin, who visited their dying place and
saw the ground covered with the bleached bones of past
generations, said that in most cases they must have crawled,
before dying, beneath and among the bushes.
Of the many interesting birds that are natives of America,
mention might be made of the condor that dwells on the
lofty peaks of the Andes, the rhea or American ostrich
that has its home on the pampas, and the turkey that
has become such a familiar feature of our English farm-
yards, but which, together with tobacco and the potato,
was unknown to our forefathers before the early Eliza-
bethan voyagers began to traffic with the strange new
world in the west.
