The 100th history textbook is online

The first one hundred school history textbooks from the German imperial period (1871-1918) have now been digitised within the framework of the GEI-Digital project and made available online to researchers and the wider public.

The aim of the GEI-Digital project is to formally catalogue and digitally capture all textbooks held in German libraries that were published between the seventeenth century and the end of National Socialism and to make them available for full-text searches.

The initial focus of the sub-project to digitise history textbooks from the imperial era lies on works for older pupils at higher education institutions. In the coming months the focus will then shift to history textbooks written for teacher training establishments.

The plan for the next 24 months is to successively digitise history textbook collections written for other types of schools and for younger pupils.
