Collection of historic atlases available

The digitisation of history textbooks from the German imperial period also includes digitising historical atlases from the same period. These will form acollection of their own.

Historical atlases contain carefully arranged and very specific cartographic works that illustrate historical events, circumstances and developments.

The seminal Historische Schul-Atlas first published by Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger in 1877, and still published today, became a standard reference work in Germany. This school atlas, which included maps of significant historic battles in its 100 or more editions, shaped a generation’s understanding of history. One of the earliest editions has been digitised as part of the GEI-Digital project and can be viewed onlinehere .
