THIRD BOOR, 
of the late Mahratta war, the annual revenue which 
arose from the collection of the saline erust on the 
margin of the lake, amounted to three lacs of 
rupees; since then, however, owing to neglect, the 
water from the mountains has so nearly filled the 
lake, as to leave but a small portion of the margin 
dry, even in the summer time, and the inhabitants 
have never resorted to any artificial means of 
extracting the salt from the water.” 
The quantity of salt used in this country is 
very great; it having been estimated at 22 
pounds annually to each individual, On thissup-

863,000,000 pounds, or 161,000 tons, Besides this 
home consumption, there is annually exported 
about 250,000 tons, the greater part of which is 
procured from the salt mines of Cheshire. It is 
fortunate that this important necessary of life is 
80 cheap. Its cost at a medium may be estimated 
at not more than sixteen shillings a ton,
