61
Beavers are famed. for their skill in making
their houses, which are called beaver dams. For
the purpose of building a dam they choose a
piece of level ground by the side of a river, or
with a stream of water running through it.
This they form into a pond, by making a bank
or dam across it.
With their sharp cutting teeth, they cut off
stakes that are five or six feet long: these they
drag to the place, and fix them in the ground,
in rows. They then fasten them with twigs,
after the manner in which baskets are made, and
with their tails plaster up the cracks or open
spaces with clay.
